Why Is My Car Idling Rough? Common Causes and What Fixes Them

Updated October 2026 · Written by the techs at The Junkie Garage

The short answer

A rough idle means the engine isn't getting an even, clean burn in every cylinder at its most delicate operating point — stopped, warm, at low rpm. Because idling is where small problems show first, a shake at a stoplight is often the earliest warning of issues that later affect acceleration and fuel economy. The causes cluster into ignition, air, fuel, and mechanical.

Cause 1: Worn spark plugs or ignition coils

The most common cause. Plugs wear with mileage; coils fail with heat — a combination Phoenix accelerates. The signature: the idle shakes consistently, sometimes flashing the check engine light with a misfire code, and fuel economy quietly drops. Plugs are a scheduled, affordable service; a single failing coil can be replaced individually. Left long, misfires dump unburned fuel into the exhaust and overheat the catalytic converter — a far more expensive failure.

Cause 2: A vacuum leak

A cracked hose or a leaking intake gasket lets unmetered air into the engine, and the computer's fuel math goes wrong at idle first — high idle speed that hunts up and down, a hissing sound under the hood, and a lean code on the scanner. Vacuum leaks range from a cheap hose to a labor-heavy intake gasket, so locating it precisely matters before any parts get bought.

Cause 3: Dirty throttle body or clogged injectors

Carbon buildup on the throttle plate changes the tiny airflow the engine needs at idle — cleaning it is a quick, affordable service. Clogged fuel injectors lean out one or more cylinders with the same rough-idle result; a fuel system cleaning sometimes cures it, and weak injectors eventually need replacement. Both causes are more common in higher-mileage cars and in engines that mostly take short trips.

Cause 4: Failing motor mounts and other mechanical causes

If the idle sounds smooth but the whole car shakes, a collapsed motor mount may be transmitting engine vibration into the body — you'll also notice a clunk when shifting from park to drive. Low compression in one cylinder (worn valves, a head gasket, timing issues) is the serious end of the rough-idle spectrum and needs a compression test to confirm. We don't do engine repair — our specialty is car AC and community support — so use this guide to ask any shop the right questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a rough idle dangerous to drive on?

Usually not immediately, but persistent misfires overheat the catalytic converter and can leave you stranded, and a shaking idle can mask a developing mechanical problem. Diagnose it within a week or two rather than living with it.

Why is the idle rough only when the AC is on?

The AC compressor loads the engine at idle exactly when it has the least reserve. A marginal idle component — weak plugs, a vacuum leak, a dirty throttle — that copes normally may stumble under that added load. It's the same problem, just exposed.

Will a code reader tell me exactly what's wrong?

It tells you which cylinder misfired or that the mixture is lean — a strong starting point, not a verdict. A plug reading, smoke test for vacuum leaks, or injector balance test turns the code into a diagnosis.

Can bad gas cause a rough idle?

Occasionally — contaminated or stale fuel, or water in the tank, can cause rough running that a fresh tank and fuel additive resolve. But if the roughness persists across two fill-ups, the cause is in the car, not the pump.
